Wood You Believe It?
The Ultimate Guide to Caring for Wooden Earrings

Picture
♡ We two in Sick Chick fell in love with wood. And we bet you did as well ♡

What to do if you want your favourite wooden jewelry last much much longer?

Taking care of your wooden earrings is important to maintain their appearance and durability over time.

Wood is a beautiful natural material but it can be sensitive to many elements, such as moisture, heat, and physical damage, so here are some insiders tips on how to properly care for your wooden earrings  ♡
1. Keep Them Dry (this is the rule No.1!)
  • Avoid water exposure: Wood can swell, warp, or crack when exposed to moisture for extended periods. Remove your wooden earrings before swimming, showering, or washing your face.
  • Store in a dry place: When not wearing them, keep your wooden jewelry in a dry, cool place, such as a jewelry box or a pouch, to avoid exposure to humidity. If you bought your Sick Chick earrings in person at the Farmers Market, summer festival or Christmas show, you were given that cute little pouch, do you remember? :))
2. Store Properly
  • Avoid direct sunlight: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause the wood and colourful paint to fade and dry out. Store your earrings away from windows or direct sunlight.
  • Use a jewelry box with compartments: This will protect the earrings from scratches and physical damage. If they’re stored in a pouch, make sure it’s lined with soft material to prevent friction.
  • Avoid pressure: Don’t store your earrings where they’ll be squished or bent, as this could cause them to crack or warp.
3. Clean Regularly
  • Dusting: Use a soft, dry cloth to gently wipe off dust and dirt. A microfiber cloth works well for this.
  • Occasional deep cleaning: If the earrings are noticeably dirty, lightly dampen a cloth with water or a wood-safe cleaner and gently wipe the surface. Avoid soaking them in water or using harsh cleaning chemicals.
  • Polishing: Occasionally, use a wood polish or oil specifically designed for wooden jewelry (like mineral oil or jojoba oil). This can help maintain the wood's luster and prevent it from drying out. We only recommend this one for natural jewelry - with no paint.
4. Avoid Chemicals and Cosmetics
  • Avoid perfumes and lotions: Spray perfumes or apply lotions before wearing your earrings. These may slightly stain or damage the wood.
  • Avoid harsh cleaning chemicals: Never use abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals (like bleach) on your wooden earrings, as they can strip the finish or cause discoloration.
5. Be Gentle with Handling
  • Handle with care: Wooden earrings are often lightweight but can be fragile. Avoid dropping them or subjecting them to rough handling, as they can break or chip.
  • Remove before physical activities: Take off your earrings before engaging in activities where they could get scratched, bent, or damaged, such as intense workouts.
6. Check for Wear and Tear
  • Inspect regularly: Over time, wooden earrings can sometimes develop cracks, chips, or wear on the finish. Regularly check for damage, and if necessary, contact us for help, advice or repairs.
7. Avoid Extreme Temperatures
  • Keep away from heat sources: High heat can cause the wood to warp or crack. Never leave your earrings in a hot car or near a heat source (like a radiator or stove).
  • Avoid freezing temperatures: Similarly, exposing wooden earrings to freezing temperatures can cause the wood to contract and crack
By following these pro tips, you can definitely keep your wooden earrings looking beautiful and lasting for years to come!
